Barningham Local History Group
The history group was founded in 2009 and covers not only Barningham but the neighbouring villages of Scargill, Hope, Newsham, Dalton, Gayles, Kirby Hill, Greta Bridge, Brignall, Rokeby and Hutton Magna. In December 2010 it was featured as the Local History Group of the Month in the BBC’s Who Do You Think You Are? magazine (click on the link below for a better view) and in 2012 its newsletter The Archive was named Newsletter of the Year by the British Association for Local History.
We currently have about 80 members, half of whom live in Barningham and the surrounding villages; the rest are scattered all over the world but have ancestral links with the area. We have extensive records, including full lists of births, marriages and deaths and the 1841-1911 censuses, all of which are available to the public — click on the Publications link for more information.
Group membership is free, but we invite you to subscribe to our newsletter The Archive — the 2021 rates are £10 for an annual subscription or £11 if we post it out to you. If you’d like to join us, please get in touch or just come along to our next meeting. They’re very informal and we’d be delighted to see you.
Next meeting: Uncertain because of coronavirus: contact chairman Phil Hunt for details.
Do get in touch with us if you have any information about our local history or if you think we might be able to assist your local or family history research. We’re always happy to help.
