Barningham Local History Group
The history group was founded in 2009 and covers not only Barningham but the neighbouring villages of Scargill, Hope, Newsham, Dalton, Gayles, Kirby Hill, Brignall, Rokeby and Hutton Magna. In December 2010 it was featured as the Local History Group of the Month in the BBC’s Who Do You Think You Are? magazine (click on the link below for a better view) and in 2012 its newsletter The Archive was named Newsletter of the Year by the British Association for Local History.
We currently have 81 members, of whom about 50 live in Barningham and the surrounding villages; the rest are scattered all over the world but have ancestral links with the area. We have extensive records, including full lists of births, marriages and deaths and the 1841-1911 censuses, all of which are available to the public — click on the Publications link for more information.
Group membership is free, but we ask you to subscribe to our monthly newsletter — £12 for an annual subscription. If you come to our meetings you’re invited to chip in £1 towards the cost of hiring the village hall.
We meet there monthly at 6pm: it’s a bit early for some, but it means local pub landlord Neil Turner, whose memories of Barningham are invaluable, can be there. If you’d like to join us, please come along to our next meeting. They’re very informal and we’d be delighted to see you.
Next meeting: Tuesday June 19th 2012 (6pm).
Do get in touch with us if you have any information about our local history or if you think we might be able to assist your local or family history research. We’re always happy to help.
